Learning a second language is often seen as a barrier when applying to study in the United States or abroad. It’s no surprise that the language learning process can feel both stressful and quite daunting, especially when comes to communicating with native speakers in both formal and informal settings.

Fear not! As a Spanish major and modern language minor at Stanford, language learning is my area of expertise, and I’d like to share 5 tips to ensure your success in your language learning journey:

  1. Learn how to imitate native speakers by using movies and music as a resource
  2. Read short stories using translated copies
  3. Take time everyday to speak with a native speaker on a variety of topics
  4. Make your own vocabulary lists when you’d like to learn new words or phrases
  5. Don’t doubt yourself! Embrace mistakes as a part of your language learning journey
